I got my masters in composition at the SF Conservatory a handful of years ago, so I feel pretty fortunate to be in the company of so many creative and motivated individuals shaping the new music scene of the Bay Area today. I remember hearing Ignition Duo play Ryan Brown’s Double Negative at Switchboard a few years back and being completely transfixed by the sonic landscape and harmonic potential that was created out of just two guitars. But I’ve known David and Ramon since my days at the Conservatory. They are both fantastic musicians with amazing chops, but I’m really inspired by the unique niche they’re carving out for10269182_10152115192366261_4932852412826764386_o themselves: from the name and overall styling to the unique sounds they create, the overall package is exciting and new and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Working with Ignition Duo has been incredibly rewarding; the guys are incredibly hungry for new music and genuinely enthusiastic about learning any number of notes in any number of possibilities. The inspiration for my piece came from our first session with the group, where we sat around in a group as they went through a whole buffet of sonic and technical possibilities. I remember asking David to try out a technique that I thought might be interesting — and he did — and it worked! and sounded great! That basically sums up the experience of working with Ignition and GCG: a seamless, easy experience where ideas are allowed to percolate freely and get realized rapidly, and of course — beautifully.
